The poetry prompt for day four of Writing 201 is “Animal.”
The form is “Concrete Poetry.”
The device is “Enjambment.”
I’ve been sick with a cold and fever this week and have spent a lot of time curled up on the couch with my dog, so she was the first animal that came to mind for today’s prompt.
Click on the images to see them larger.
Puppy paws playfully pounce,
tossing toys this way and that.
Tail in the air,
snout in a rout,
joyfully sniffing about.
Pausing to sleep in a streak of sunshine.
Dreaming sweet dreams of the next escapade.
Rising,
rested,
ready to go.
Running and racing then
s l o w.
Paws
pause.
Eyes seek me out.
Leaning
lovingly,
strokes,
pats,
and pets.
Curled
cuddling
sublimely content,
my steadfast canine companion.

What a great tribute to your dog. Since it is an exact image, I’d consider framing it. Lots of nice alliteration. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! Sophie is a sweet one, playful, and by far the smartest dog I’ve ever had 🙂 Hopefully I’ll be out and about with her in a day or two. I think she’s bored with the couch routine. I know I am… That must mean I’m on the mend. Boredom is a sure sign that you’re recuperating! Thanks again!

That is really amazing. I’ve been sitting back watching (reading) all you talented poets in the challenge and I am quite impressed! Dogs are wonderful and your poem was perfect!

Thanks Teri! Yes, there are a bunch of creative writers participating. I signed up impulsively to force myself to write. (Same reason for blogging.) I’d like to write more, but I find it intimidating, especially longer pieces. Contemplating writing an article (Which you do quite well 🙂 ! ) Boggles my my mind and makes me nervous. Poetry seems like a good place to start because my writing, since college, has consisted almost exclusively of writing random thoughts on scraps of paper or been limited to proofreading my kids’ and husband’s writing. I’d like to be able to pair my photos with some creative, perhaps inspirational, words.
Thanks again for the encouragement! I appreciate it!

Way to stretch yourself! You’re photos are wonderful and pairing them with any of your words will make for fantastic blogging! Have fun!

How sweet, Terry. The poem is beautiful. I could feel the love. This dog must love you to! 🙂
It was a creative idea to use the photo.
Get well soon. It’s weekend and I hope the weather is good over there so you can get outside with the dog.

Thank you! She’s a super sweet dog and the obvious animal to write about as i was watching her play with her toys. If she’s looking for a game of fetch and I’m being uncooperative, she’ll toss the toy herself, then chase it, pounce on it and then repeat this process over and over until she’s had enough.
Thanks for the well-wishes! Maybe I’ll venture out today for a little longer than it takes me to fill the bird feeders.

That’s fantastic! Keep going, keep going! From this alone you could make a series.

I remember you’re a dog lover, so I think maybe you’re partial 🙂 I really do appreciate the encouragement though. Thank you so much!

There are many dog lovers. I think I want to reblog this… would you mind?

Thank you, I feel honored! I’ve seen reblogs, but don’t know much of the inner workings. How exactly do you do a reblog?

I’ve done my first reblog unintentionally. There usually is a button for reblogging with each post. I’ve looked around a bit to find out about it. If you like something, you can reblog. But constantly reblogging is frowned upon, because in a way it’s like stealing someone else’s content. Compared to just linking to another post, reblogging has the advantage that you get directed to the original, and readers are supposed to leave their likes and comments with the original, and not the reblogger. You also get a notification that someone reblogged your post, but I find it friendlier to just leave a short note, and insert a comment in my reblog why I did so. So, onwards, I’m going to reblog now. 🙂

Cool! Let me know If i need to turn on something, adjust some setting on my end! Thanks again! Being reblogged feels like being endorsed! But I can see where being reblogged frequently could feel like being taken advantage of, especially If there was no link back.
Thanks again!

No, all is well, it worked. I’m just editing my own text a bit. You should have a notification by now.

Reblogged this on Flights of Fancy and commented:
I always like to look at the photographs and general posts of T. Boswell’s (terryb) ‘Through the lens of my life’. But as a dog person, I found this entry especially interesting, that’s why I’m reblogging. I admire people who can write poetry, and combining that with an image–and capturing the spirit of dog the way she does here, is remarkable. I loved it, and I think other dog people will, too.
