Artificial

Who do they think they’re fooling? Even in the fading light this cell phone tower, camouflaged with artificial foliage, has a hard time blending with its surroundings. It looks like a giant bottle cleaning brush or prickly Q-tip.

Since attempts to disguise these things as trees always seem to fail, perhaps it would be best to embrace their artificial nature rather than unsuccessfully try to hide it. I would love to see at least some made into  fantastical sculpture like the Montjuïc Telecommunications Tower in Barcelona which doubles as a sundial.

Cell phone towers seem to be a permanent part of our future. What do you think about their aesthetic role?

This is my response to Jennifer Nichole Wells’s One Word Photo Challenge: Artificial.

  1. That sculpture in Barcelona is amazing! I wish ‘they’d make something like that out of all artificial things standing around. Honestly, I never thought much about cell phone towers. I find the bottle-brush tree kinda funny. 🙂

    1. I find the bottle brush tree kinda funny too… and kinda ridiculous. If it’s big and metal, at least get creative with it and let it be big and metal. Those towers would really be something fashioned into modern or maybe even whimsical sculpture. I guess not everyone would care for that, but I would enjoy it 🙂

    1. They definitely should get something for effort, although maybe not quite an A. They do look odder when it’s daytime. Twilight allows them to blend better with their surroundings. I snapped the shot that you see here when I spotted the cell tower one evening while I had the photo challenge Artificial on my mind. I haven’t had the time to go back for another daylight photo to expose it as even more artificial!
