Photography 101: Landmark

Yesterday was the seventh day of Photography 101, and the theme: Landmark.

“Landmarks are everywhere: iconic places, meeting points, markers on a map. Today, consider a unique point of view as you photograph a landmark.”

This morning I left the house, once again toting my camera. It was very overcast and misting rendering everything monochromatic. After dropping my son off at the mechanic’s to pick up his car in Warwick, NY, I headed toward the Clock Tower building. I thought I would use that as my landmark, but then I saw the Old School Baptist Church framed against the gray sky across the street in Lewis Park.

The steeple can be seen from most places throughout the town of Warwick.

The church, built in 1810, is designated a historic landmark and is open to all to use for weddings, concerts, plays and the Village Christmas Eve service. In 1997 it was the site of the wedding scene in the movie “In and Out”.

I photographed the church from several angles and decided to post these two. It was such a gray day, I felt as if I were shooting in black and white. The little bit of color in the lawn of the first photo seems to me a bit surreal and almost artificial, as if I had slightly colorized a black and white photo.
