One Word Photo Challenge: Bittersweet

I took this photo a few years ago and thought of it for this week’s One Word Photo Challenge: Bittersweet. Does anyone know what kind of flower it is?
(Update February 28, 2015 – It’s a Begonia! After a little bit of dialogue, this was confirmed by MyFoodAndFlowers. Scroll down to the comments to see photos that include the leaves and stems.)

Thank you Jennifer for the challenge!

    1. I’ll check to see if I have a photo showing more of the plant, but if I remember correctly, I think I only took close shots of that one. Thank you for having a look and taking the time to comment!

        1. I rooted around in the computer (I really must organize my files better than I have in the past.) and found a photo of this flower that includes leaves, stems, another flower and the edge of a bud. The popular thought here was that it’s a hibiscus, but I believe it’s a begonia! I never would have guessed it from the close-up of just the one flower! I uploaded two views so you can have a look. One here…

          and another here…

          1. Goodness, I didn’t know the links would show up here, but there they are!… And perhaps I found a better version of that flower than I originally posted 😛

          2. That’s what I thought too, but then I looked at the stems and leaves and the edge of the bud in the upper right corner and thought it was a fancy hybrid begonia… hmm now I’m not so sure… maybe I’ll poke around on google…

          3. Hmm… did you visit my actual post page? In the comment section I put links to photos that showed the whole flowers, stems, leaves and a bit of a bud. Maybe I need to post them differently… Thanks for your help 🙂

  1. My first guess would have been hibiscus, too, but without seeing the whole plant, and maybe other flowers, it’s hard to tell. It looks like a hybrid, but I could be wrong. I’d say it definitely belongs to the Malva family.

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to look and help me out! 🙂 I was so surprised to see the stems and leaves and think, “It’s a begonia?” Is the smaller less ornate flower the female?
